NEPAL IN CRISIS: Landslide-Induced Debris Flow Leaves Communities Devastated as Families Face an Uncertain Future

CEIFA MINISTRY | HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH

A devastating natural disaster has struck communities along Nepal’s Budhi Gandaki River, leaving destruction, displacement, and uncertainty in its wake. Families across the Manaslu and Tsum Valley regions are facing the painful consequences of a landslide-induced debris flow that has swept away homes, damaged vital infrastructure, and disrupted entire communities.

The disaster reportedly began at approximately 04:22 local time near Chumchet, when a dry landslide or rock avalanche blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, forming a temporary natural dam. At around 06:00, the blockage breached, releasing a powerful surge of water, rocks, and debris downstream.

A Trail of Destruction

The destructive flow reportedly swept away or destroyed between 35 and 50 houses and temporary shelters in affected communities, including areas within Chumnubri and Dharche rural municipalities.

Several suspension bridges, motorable bridges, and road networks sustained major damage. Among the affected structures were the Soti steel bridge and part of the Nayapul bridge. The under-construction Sahaj Urja Powerhouse also suffered significant damage.

Beyond the physical destruction, families have lost homes, livelihoods, and essential connections to neighbouring communities.

Rescue Efforts and Missing Persons

Initial reports indicate that between five and six people were missing or remained out of contact following the disaster.

Emergency response teams, including security forces and the Nepali Army, reportedly evacuated or rescued more than 500 people, including foreign nationals.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) and the Nepal Red Cross Society have mobilized personnel and helicopters to support search-and-rescue operations and humanitarian assistance.

A Call for Compassion and Solidarity

At CEIFA Ministry, we believe that humanity calls us to stand with those experiencing suffering, regardless of geographical boundaries, nationality, or background.

When disaster strikes, compassion must go beyond words. Families who have lost their homes need shelter. Communities need food, clean water, clothing, and essential supplies. Children and vulnerable individuals need protection, reassurance, and hope.

This is a moment to remember the people of Nepal in our prayers and, wherever possible, extend practical support to those affected.
